AA Waste is based in Woking, Surrey, Chard, Somerset and Southampton, Hampshire. From these bases we provide a UK national collection and recycling service for fluorescent light tubes every year for companies and authorities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
AA Waste prefer to use recycling routes over landfill. Fluorescent light tubes are a recyclable item, therefore along with our business partners we use a recycling route to deal with them. AA Waste will collect your spent fluorescent light tubes. They are taken to a fully licensed transfer station, where our business partners store them until such time as there is a large enough quantity. They are then delivered in bulk to the recycling plant where the recycling process begins. Upon arrival at the recycling plant, the tubes are loaded onto a conveyer belt and crushed under negative pressure. The mercury-containing calcium phosphate is separated into a storage container, and the glass and aluminium end caps are segregated. The powder is then subjected to a process called "retorting" where the mercury is heated, vaporized, and distilled for recovery. The recovered mercury, aluminium end caps, and glass are marketed to manufacturers and utilized in a variety of products. Air emission monitoring of the tube crusher and analytical testing on the glass and aluminium end caps, are conducted at the recycling facility to ensure that the mercury-containing powder is being controlled according to all current regulations. This makes our recycling service extremely successful from both environmental and cost perspectives.
